From Underdogs to Champions: Binar U18 Boys Reign Supreme in Singapore

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

In early April, Binar had the incredible opportunity to take an U18 Boy's team over to Singapore to compete in the highly prestigious International Basketball Tournament Singapore. Their path to victory was filled with ups and downs, showcasing the true spirit of resilience and teamwork.

In their final qualifying game, Binar faced a formidable opponent and unfortunately suffered a tough defeat, being outplayed by 27 points. It was a challenging experience where selfish basketball, blame, and internal conflicts overshadowed their performance. The team was left feeling embarrassed by their display.

This defeat dropped the boys down to third on the ladder, concluding the qualifying games with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. However, the true character of this remarkable group emerged in the face of adversity. Just 4 hours later, the team had to face the same formidable opponent again in a sudden-death semi-final.

What happened next was truly extraordinary. The team gathered, put everything on the table, and made a commitment to each other. They decided to bring positivity, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude into the crucial game ahead. With an early lead, the entire group played exceptionally, showcasing their skills. As expected, the opposing team fought back fiercely, challenging Binar till the very end.

With just over a minute left on the clock, and trailing by 5 points, the game seemed to be slipping away. However, fueled by unwavering belief and an indomitable spirit, the Binar boys performed a magical comeback, defying all odds, and won a nail-biter by a mere 2 points! The victory propelled them into the Grand Final, where they prepared for a tough and hard-fought battle.

In a clash where every possession mattered, Binar fought tooth and nail, displaying unparalleled grit and determination. After a grueling contest, our team emerged victorious, proudly crowned as champions of the IBTS Tournament. It was a testament to their resilience, teamwork, and unwavering belief in themselves.

We couldn't be prouder of this exceptional group of young athletes who showcased incredible character, sportsmanship, and perseverance. They turned a humbling defeat into a remarkable triumph, inspiring us all with their unwavering spirit.

A massive thank you to Dr Corey Dalton, our offical club doctor, for keeping the boys fit and healthy throughout the week. We also want to recognise our very own Founder and Executive Director, Adam Desmond, for coaching and mentoring the boys. We are grateful to have people like them in our corner supporting our young athletes on and off the court.
